How to Apply for a New PAN Card Online in 2025

PAN means Permanent Account Number — it’s a unique 10-digit number that the Indian Income Tax Department gives you.

You’ll need it for:

  • Opening a bank account

  • Filing your income tax return

  • Getting a salary

  • Investing in mutual funds or shares

  • Buying or selling property

  • Applying for a loan or credit card

  • Doing any big money transaction

Basically, it’s your money fingerprint in India — if you earn, you need one. Simple.

Who Can Apply for a PAN Card?

Almost everyone:

  • Indian citizens (of any age)

  • Foreign citizens who have income/business in India

  • Minors (kids) — parents can apply for them

  • Companies, NGOs, firms, trusts

But this guide is for regular Indian citizens applying for the first time.

Where Do You Apply?

The Income Tax Department has two official partners who handle online applications:

  1. NSDL (now called Protean eGov)
  2. UTIITSL

Both are legit. You can use whichever you like. In this guide, I’ll explain how to do it through NSDL because it’s the one most people use.

Complete Steps to Apply for a New PAN Card Online

Visit the Official Website

Open your laptop or mobile browser and go to:
Click Now

This page takes you straight to the new PAN Card form.

Pick the Right Application Type

  • Application Type: New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)

  • If you’re an NRI or foreigner, it’s Form 49AA — but for most of us, it’s 49A.

Fill in Your Basic Details

You’ll see a form asking for:

  • Your Full Name (must match your Aadhaar exactly — spelling too!)

  • Date of Birth

  • Father’s Name (mandatory — mother’s name is optional but you can add it)

  • Gender

  • Mobile Number and Email ID — must be correct because you’ll get an OTP.

Provide Your Communication Address

This is where your actual PAN Card will be delivered by post.
So write your full residential address, landmark, PIN code etc. properly.
Double-check everything before you move on.

Upload Your Documents

  • Identity Proof: Best option — Aadhaar Card (covers ID, address, and DOB proof in one go).
  • Photo: Recent passport size, clear background, JPEG format.
  • Signature: Take a blank white paper, sign with a dark pen, scan or click a clear photo.

Make sure files aren’t too big — ideally under 300 KB each.

Pay the Application Fee

At the end of the form, you’ll see the fee:

  • About ₹107 if your address is in India

  • About ₹1,017 if you want the card delivered abroad

You can pay using debit card, credit card, net banking.

Aadhaar e-KYC & OTP Verification

If you’ve provided Aadhaar and your mobile number is linked to it, you’ll get an OTP on that number.

If OTP works, great — your documents are verified digitally, no need to send any hard copies.

If the OTP doesn’t work or your mobile isn’t linked, then you’ll need to:

  • Download and print your application form.

  • Attach copies of your Aadhaar and other proofs.

  • Sign it.

  • Post it to NSDL’s address

Save Your Acknowledgement Number

Once you pay and submit, you’ll see a 15-digit Acknowledgement Number.

Track Your Application

It usually takes 7–15 working days for your PAN Card to reach you by post.

You can track it here: Track PAN Status

You’ll also get updates on your email/SMS.

Once Approved

You’ll get:

  • A physical laminated PAN Card by post.

  • A soft copy on email (e-PAN) — fully valid.

Common Mistakes People Make

Name doesn’t match Aadhaar — your name must be EXACTLY the same.
Photo is blurry — take a fresh, clear photo.
Signature mismatch — sign properly, not too small.
Wrong address — the post guy shouldn’t have to hunt you down.
Fake agents — don’t pay some random guy at a shop thousands for this. Do it yourself — it’s simple.

Quick Tips to Make it Smooth

✔️ Use a laptop if possible — uploading files is easier.
✔️ Keep all your scans ready in a folder before starting.
✔️ Double-check your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar.
✔️ Keep the acknowledgement safe — email it to yourself too.

What if You Lose Your PAN Card Later?

Don’t worry — your PAN number is for life. If you lose the card, just apply for a reprint online. Same number, new card.
